The History of Million Meals Program at Family of Christ
Back in 1986, Lew Lardie and his wife Bobbie lived in Fullerton, CA and was about to retire. After 37 years as district sales manager for Procter and Gamble Foods, the supervisor asked Lew what he was going to do in his retirement. Lew says, "Out of the blue , the answer came to me. I wanted to help feed people who were hungry."
Lew toured the local food bank near his home and learned that local hunger relief agencies committed to being a part of a food bank network through shared maintenance fees. All the food was donated, but the 10 cents per pound (in 1986) maintenance fee covered the cost of shipping, storing and distributing the food. The average meal, calculated by nutritional and caloric value, was approximately 1.3 pounds. That made the cost of a meal through the program about 13 cents (in 1986). "I realized by tapping into the food bank system, I could leverage donations to provide more food for people who were hungry than you could ever get at the store," Lew says.
While still in California, Lew began collection funds at his church and donating to local hunger relief agencies. He called his idea the MILLION MEALS PROGRAM because he hoped to provide a million meals for people where were hungry. His former church has now distributed over 4,000,000 pounds of food to the needy.
When the Lardie's moved to Vancouver, Lew brought his Million Meals program to Family of Christ. "Family of Christ is behind the program 110 percent," he says. "Our congregation donates between $800 to $1000 each month.
